Public bicycle rental and return terminals along the Shimanami Kaido

This page introduces the public rental cycle terminals where you can rent and return bicycles on the Shimanami Kaido. Depending on your cycling plan, you can decide where to pick up your bike and where to return it.

Hello, I am Kawai, a cyclist living on the Shimanami Kaido. This is a personal website where I have gathered information for travel planning. It would be great if you could visit one of the most famous cycling routes in Japan.
Public rental cycle terminals
The most common public rental cycle service “Shimanami Rental Cycle” on the Shimanami Kaido is currently operated by the general incorporated association “Shimanami Japan” on both the Ehime and Hiroshima sides. There are ten terminals across the Shimanami Kaido area. Depending on the type of bicycle, there may be some restrictions, but users can rent and return bicycles at these terminals.

Each rental terminal differs in size, location, and business hours, but I felt that such information is limited or difficult to understand even on the official websites, so I decided to summarize it independently.

The best terminal to rent and return a bicycle also depends on your planning, such as whether you ride through the Shimanami Kaido from one side to the other, or only cycle a certain section.

Where you can get bicycles
Onomichi Station Front (Onomichi)
There is one rental cycle terminal on the mainland (Honshu) side in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. It used to be located inside the multi-story parking facility at Onomichi Port, about 400 meters on foot from JR Onomichi Station on the Sanyo Main Line, but it moved to the Onomichi Station Front Building in October 2025. The Onomichi Station Front Rental Cycle Terminal is open from 8:00 to 19:00. During the winter season (December–February), closing time becomes one hour earlier (8:00–18:00).

* Since October 2025, the Onomichi Port Rental Cycle Terminal has moved to the Onomichi Station Front Building.
Advantages of the Onomichi Rental Cycle Terminal
Thanks to its convenient access from Onomichi Station and its excellent location, this is one of the most frequently used rental cycle terminals for cycling the Shimanami Kaido. Because it is such a popular terminal, it seems to have more than 200–300 bicycles available, including various types. Also, although numbers are limited, electric-assist bicycles and e-bikes are available at the Onomichi Rental Cycle Terminal.

Shimin Center (Mukaishima)
There is one public rental cycle terminal on Mukaishima (Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture). On the north side of the island, in the central town area, the “Onomichi Shimin Center Mukaishima” serves as the rental cycle terminal.

The number and variety of bicycles are limited, and it seems to be less than 100 in total. Opening hours are 8:30–19:00, and during winter (December–February) it closes one hour earlier. Since it is not very far from Onomichi Port, only a limited number of cycling travelers tend to use this terminal. However, rental cycle users can use the parking lot for free, which is probably the biggest advantage. Parking around Onomichi city is limited and long-hour parking fees can be quite high, so this might be convenient if you are coming by car.
*From April 2025, the Shimin Center Mukaishima rental cycle terminal requires advance reservation.

Habu Port (Innoshima)
There is one public rental cycle terminal on Innoshima (Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture). It is located at Habu Port (Chuo Pier) on the south side of the island. Opening hours are 8:30–19:00, and during winter (December–February) it closes one hour earlier.

Advantages of Habu Port Rental Cycle Terminal
The rental counter is inside a building facing the road, and the Habu Port bus stop, for buses heading to Onomichi Station, is close by. Passenger ferries departing from Habu Port also run to Imabari and Mihara, making it a convenient return point for your bicycle. After returning your bike, you can smoothly travel by bus to Onomichi, Mihara, or Imabari. Note that the adjacent Onomichi municipal parking lot is a paid parking facility.

Setoda Tourist Information Center (Ikuchijima)
There are two public rental cycle terminals on Ikuchijima (Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture).
The Setoda Tourist Information Center is located across from the Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art, and it functions as one of the rental cycle terminals. It is a relatively small terminal, but they do have a limited number of electric-assist bicycles. Opening hours are 9:00–17:00. The location is convenient for returning your bike, although it closes earlier than most of the other terminals.

Advantages of Setoda Tourist Information Center Terminal
The Setoda Tourist Information Center is only about 650 m from Setoda Port, making it a convenient place to return your bicycle. After cycling roughly half of the Shimanami Kaido, you can return your bike here and take a boat from Setoda Port to Onomichi Port.

Sunset Beach (Ikuchijima)

The other rental cycle terminal on Ikuchijima is Setoda Sunset Beach, a seaside and outdoor complex on the west side of the island. Opening hours are also 9:00–17:00, but note that it closes a bit earlier than other locations.
Advantages of the Sunset Beach Terminal
There is a large free parking area, and they offer a relatively wide range of bicycles, so this terminal is used quite often by cyclists on the Shimanami Kaido. In addition to electric-assist bicycles, they also rent tandem bicycles (usable only on Ikuchijima) and kids’ bikes. It is frequently used for group cycling experiences as part of bus tours. The location is suitable for cycling around Ikuchijima or even making a trip over to nearby Oshima. In summer, it can be fun to combine marine activities with cycling.

Tatara Shimanami Park (Omishima)

On Omishima (Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture), there is a Shimanami Rental Cycle terminal at the roadside station “Tatara Shimanami Park” located in the Kamiura area on the east side of the island, near Tatara Bridge. It is also known as the “Kamiura Rental Cycle Terminal.” The opening hours are also 9:00–17:00, so please be aware that it closes relatively early. Please also note that this is a completely different service from the newly installed share bikes at Tatara Shimanami Park. The scale is around 100 bicycles. Compared to the island-side terminals, Setoda Sunset Beach has a larger number and wider variety of bicycles. However, the Kamiura Rental Cycle Terminal also provides electric-assist bicycles, although the total number is limited.
Advantages of the Kamiura Rental Cycle Terminal
Since it is located at a roadside station, there is free parking, and it has an excellent location close to the “Omishima Interchange” on the expressway and the highway bus stop “Omishima BS”. If you start a half-course cycling trip on the Shimanami Kaido from Imabari or Onomichi, I think this is a very convenient place to return your rental bicycle. After returning your bicycle, you can take a highway bus to Imabari Station or Fukuyama Station in Hiroshima Prefecture from the nearby Omishima BS. It is convenient for moving either toward Shikoku or Honshu. It is also suitable for cycling around Omishima.

Hakata S.C Park (Hakatajima)
On Hakatajima (Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture) along the Shimanami Kaido, there is a rental cycle terminal at the roadside station “Hakata S.C Park” (Marine Oasis Hakata) located on the west side of the island. It is also known as the “Hakata Rental Cycle Terminal.” As with the other island terminals, the opening hours are 9:00–17:00. Since it closes relatively early, please be aware if you plan to return your bicycle here.

Advantages of the Hakata Rental Cycle Terminal
Since this is also a roadside station, there is free parking, and it enjoys a convenient location close to the “Hakatajima Interchange” on the expressway and the “Hakatajima BS” bus stop. If you start from Imabari or Onomichi and plan to return your bicycle here and then take a bus toward either Shikoku or Honshu, this is a convenient return point. It can also be used for a casual ride around Hakatajima.

| Telephone | 0897-72-0018 |

Yoshiumi Ikiiki-kan (Oshima)
On Oshima in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture, there is a terminal called “Yoshiumi Rental Cycle Terminal” located at the roadside station Yoshiumi Ikiiki-kan, on the south side of the island near the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge. Like the other terminals on the islands, its opening hours are from 9:00 to 17:00.

This is also a roadside station, so free parking is available, and it serves as a tourist base with seafood barbecue and whirlpool boat cruises. The number and variety of bicycles are not very large, but perhaps because it is also used by groups, it seems better equipped than the terminals on Omishima and Hakatajima. Since the ferry service between Imabari Port and Oshima Shitadami Port has been discontinued, access by public transportation such as buses or boats is not very convenient. I would recommend this terminal for those planning a cycling route that goes around Oshima.

Sunrise Itoyama (Imabari)

There are two rental cycle terminals in the mainland area of Imabari City (on the Shikoku side), which is frequently used as a start or finish point for Shimanami Kaido rides. Among them, Sunrise Itoyama is one of the most commonly used rental cycle terminals along the Shimanami Kaido, together with the Imabari Station Cycling Terminal. It is also sometimes called the “Central Rental Cycle Terminal” or the “Imabari Cycling Terminal.” The rental terminal facilities were renovated in 2020. It is open throughout the year from 8:00 to 20:00.
Advantages of Sunrise Itoyama
Sunrise Itoyama has the largest number of bicycles among all Shimanami Kaido rental cycle terminals. You can rent all bicycle types offered by Shimanami Rental Cycles. Although there are some restrictions on one-way rentals, electric-assist bicycles, tandem bicycles, e-bikes, and children’s bikes are also available. Since the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge is right in front, it is a great location for a short cycling experience across the bridge. Although it is located away from the central area of Imabari, free parking is available.

Imabari Station (Imabari)
The most frequently used rental cycle terminal for Shimanami Kaido rides is the Imabari Station Cycling Terminal, newly opened in 2020. It is a cycling complex facility that also includes a tourist information center and community space, and is also known as the “i.i.imabari! Cycle Station.” It is open throughout the year from 8:00 to 20:00.

The bicycles available here are cross bikes, city bikes, electric-assist bikes, and e-bikes. If you want to rent a tandem bicycle or a children’s bike, you should head to Sunrise Itoyama instead.
Advantages of Imabari Ekimae Cycling Terminal
The biggest advantage of the Imabari Ekimae Cycling Terminal is definitely its excellent location right in front of the station. It has a large number of bicycles available and plenty of cycling information, making it a recommended starting point. For those planning to ride the entire Shimanami Kaido one-way, the three main starting options are this Imabari Ekimae Cycling Terminal, Sunrise Itoyama, or Onomichi.

Returning Bikes at Partner Hotels
Many hotels, ryokan, guesthouses, and other types of accommodation in Imabari have partnerships with the public rental bike service along the Shimanami Kaido. This service is available only for staying guests, but it allows you to return your bike directly at your accommodation. If you are staying near Sunrise Itoyama or near Imabari Station, returning your bike at the official rental terminals will be just as convenient, so the benefit of returning bikes at your accommodation may be limited. However, if you plan to stay in areas such as Nibukawa Onsen or Yunoura Onsen (outside central Imabari), this service might be very helpful.

Terminal reorganization
In April 2022, several Shimanami Rental Cycle terminals were reorganized. In addition, the location of the Onomichi rental terminal changed in October 2025. Please be careful if you are using an older guidebook or brochure.

- The rental terminal at Imabari Port (Harbor Facility “Harborii”) was closed and integrated into the Imabari Station Cycling Terminal.
- The Miyakubo Rental Cycle Terminal (Oshima – Miyakubo Tourist Information Center) was closed.
- The Omishima Rental Cycle Terminal (Omishima – Roadside Station Mishima) withdrew from the Shimanami public rental system and now offers its own local service.
- The 24-hour return spots at Imabari City Hall and Imabari Port were discontinued, and a new after-hours return point was established at the Imabari Station Cycling Terminal.
- In October 2025, the Onomichi Port Rental Cycle Terminal was moved to the Onomichi Station Rental Cycle Terminal.
