Lunch Spots on Oshima
Noshima Suigun
![[Photo] Lunch spots on the Shimanami Kaido: Restaurant Noshima Suigun on Oshima](https://touring-shimanami.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/shimanami-cycling-lunch-1.jpg)
Seafood Lunch on the Shimanami Kaido Located just off the main route in the northern part of Oshima—the first island from Imabari—you’ll find Noshima Suigun near Miyakubo Fishing Port. This restaurant is famous for its fresh seafood dishes such as seafood rice bowls. Since it’s run directly by the local fisheries cooperative, the seafood here is incredibly fresh. In addition to the luxurious “Special Seafood Bowl,” they also offer grilled fish and sashimi set meals. Their seafood BBQ is also quite impressive. While the BBQ at the nearby roadside station Yoshiumi Iki-iki Kan is well-known, I personally prefer Noshima Suigun for its rich use of local ingredients. It’s a great option if you want to enjoy a bold seafood BBQ. You can also take a thrilling tidal current cruise from here, an experience related to the legendary pirate clan that once ruled these waters.
Reviews of Noshima SuigunThe Special Seafood Bowl was surprisingly delicious! It even had gold flakes on top—super fancy!
The seafood BBQ included a whole sea bream, turban shell, clams, octopus, squid, shrimp, and more!
If you can time it right, the tidal cruise is a must. The captain’s boat handling skills are next level!

Café Lunch on the Shimanami Kaido Kameyama Goya is a scenic café that opened in 2020 and is loved by local cyclists. It’s located along the main route, partway up a hill from Yoshiumi Iki-iki Kan. You’ll see signs and flags for the café on the way. There’s a bike rack near the parking area, and from there, it’s a 1–2 minute walk up a mountain path to reach the wooden cabin-like café. The view of Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge from here is absolutely stunning. Inside the cozy café, you can enjoy authentic Asian dishes such as green curry, lu rou fan, and pho, depending on the season. It’s also a great stop for a quick break with sweets like lemon tofu pudding or cake.

You can enjoy delicious lunch options such as pasta, and the house-roasted coffee tastes even better with a sea view. The café is cyclist-friendly, with bike racks available out front. The wooden interior was renovated by the owner himself, and soft music plays in the background, making it a relaxing stop. Books line the shelves, perfect if you feel like reading over a long break.

Café Lunch on the Shimanami Kaido If you’re cycling the Shimanami Kaido on a weekend, Bakery Paysan is a must-visit lunch spot on Oshima. Known for their homemade natural yeast bread, this bakery café opens from Friday to Sunday with a café menu focused on sandwiches. Bread is also available for takeaway on Fridays and Sundays only. Many people even cross bridges from afar just to buy their bread! The shop is tucked away slightly off the main road, so it’s fun to explore the area by bike while looking for it. Recently, the owner’s sons opened a burger stand called Paysan Burger right in front of the bakery. Personally, I like buying some bread and enjoying it while sitting by the seaside nearby.

Seafood Lunch on the Shimanami Kaido On the outer loop route of Hakatajima Island, just behind the local high school, there’s a small cape with scenic views. At the top of that cape is Uotsune Umegahana, a seafood restaurant offering stunning ocean views from its traditional tatami seating area. The lunch menu features affordable options like seafood rice bowls and conger eel (anago) bowls. I always order the anago bowl, but they also serve beautifully presented course meals and sushi—well worth the splurge if you’re in the mood to treat yourself.
Reviews of Uotsune UmegahanaYou can see the strong tidal currents of Funaori Strait flowing like a river.

Café Time on the Shimanami Kaido If you’re cycling around the coastal route of Hakatajima Island, don’t miss stopping by the cake café Patisserie T’s Cafe Tamaya. Located in the seaside district of Aritsu, the café features a large window facing the ocean, offering a panoramic view that looks like a framed painting. The café’s roots go back to a traditional Japanese sweet shop called Tamaya, opened in 1948. The second-generation owner trained in Western confectionery in Osaka before returning to his hometown to open this patisserie café. After a long ride, a few extra calories are no big deal!

Local Gourmet on the Shimanami Kaido In the heart of Hakatajima, in the town of Kinoura, you’ll find the popular ramen shop Sanwa. Their specialty is the famous Hakata Salt Ramen, made with a delicate broth of 17 ingredients, seasoned with local Hakata sea salt. The shop originally started as “Sanwa Shokudo" in 1971, after the local saltworks closed, founded by a couple who wanted to preserve the island’s culinary traditions. It has long been a favorite among shipyard and marine industry workers. I always go for the ramen set menu, which includes a small rice bowl of the day. When the side is clam-flavored rice, it’s a real treat. After sweating on a long ride, a sip of this flavorful salty broth hits the spot like nothing else.
Reviews of SanwaNot too salty, light and refined flavor. Really delicious.
The salt ramen soaked into my dry body—drank every drop of the soup.
The limited-edition Saturday mandarin inari sushi includes both pulp and zest.

Local Gourmet on the Shimanami Kaido Due to the presence of shipyards and strong connections to cities like Hiroshima and Osaka, Hakatajima has several okonomiyaki restaurants. Interestingly, many of these offer both Hiroshima-style and Kansai-style okonomiyaki. One of the most popular spots for cyclists is Fuu, conveniently located near the Hakata SC Park roadside station and the expressway interchange. Their okonomiyaki and teppanyaki are well-loved. Seafood Lunch on the Shimanami Kaido Located near Miyaura Port on Omishima Island, Yoshikawa is a cozy, local seafood restaurant where both travelers and locals enjoy lunch. Inside, there’s a live fish tank, ensuring top-notch freshness. Their specialty seafood rice bowl comes topped with a raw egg yolk, which adds richness when mixed in. Other bowl dishes include squid and sea urchin, and there are also hearty options like fried oyster sets and curry rice. Because the fish is prepared right from the tank, freshness is guaranteed. The soy-based sauces reflect the light and slightly sweet flavors typical of the Seto Inland Sea. A bicycle rack is available in the parking lot, making this a cyclist-friendly stop.
Reviews of YoshikawaThe balance of fish, seaweed, and the egg yolk in the seafood bowl was perfect.

Cafe Lunch on the Shimanami Kaido The southern coastal road of Omishima is one of the most scenic stretches of the Shimanami Kaido, with breathtaking ocean views and crystal-clear water—but very few restaurants. In 2018, Bubuka opened in this beautiful, remote location. This stylish cafe serves dishes made with local ingredients and homemade sourdough bread. Their signature lunch, “Bubuka’s Daily Plate,” features seasonal vegetables and flavors. If the weather is nice, we recommend sitting upstairs—where you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views that make for a truly special dining experience.

Local Gourmet on the Shimanami Kaido Wild boars are a major threat to agriculture on the Seto Inland Sea islands. At Shishikotsu Ramen, located on the approach to Oyamazumi Shrine on Omishima, you can taste a truly local dish made from wild boar. The shop is run by a hunter and member of the Shimanami Inoshishi Utilization Group, who also personally catches and prepares the meat. You can choose from salt, miso, or soy sauce-based broth—but our favorite is the wild boar salt ramen. A squeeze of lemon mid-way through adds a refreshing twist! The handmade boar char siu is delicious, and we recommend adding extra toppings.
Reviews of Shishikotsu RamenThe char siu is made with boar, and the slight gaminess adds depth to the flavor.

Seafood Lunch on the Shimanami Kaido If you’re passing through Ikuchijima, don’t miss the chance to try their signature seafood: grilled anago (sea eel). Unlike eel (unagi), anago is smaller and leaner, offering a light yet umami-rich flavor. In the Setoda area, near attractions like Kosanji Temple, the Hirayama Ikuo Museum, and Shiomachi Shopping Street, you’ll find several places serving anago rice bowls. My top pick is Kaneyoshi, a friendly local diner offering a variety of seafood bowls and set meals. We recommend the Anago-meshi Teishoku—grilled anago with house-made sauce over rice. It’s so good, you won’t be able to stop eating!
Reviews of KaneyoshiThe anago is fluffy, and the sauce blends perfectly with the rice—absolutely delicious.

During lunch, they serve a variety of rice bowls including fresh seafood options. Our recommendation? Try the Lemon Pork Bowl—made with branded pork from neighboring Iwagijima, where pigs are raised on feed containing lemon. Pair it with their house-made lemon soda for a perfect citrusy combo—you’ll finish it in no time!
Reviews of Shimanami RomanA great restaurant where you can also find all kinds of Shimanami-related souvenirs.

Café Lunch on the Shimanami Kaido Located along the charming Shiomachi Shopping Street, Shiomachitei is a popular café and bar among cyclists. Housed in a beautifully restored Edo-period building, it’s a stylish, cyclist-friendly café. There’s even a dirt-floor area near the tatami seating where you can safely park your bicycle inside the shop—perfect for those riding high-end road bikes. The owner is a certified bicycle mechanic and supports local cycling, including rental bike services. I usually stop by for coffee and a slice of cake, though their keema curry looks so tempting—I just haven’t managed to try it yet. In the evenings, the place transforms into a cozy bar with live music events. If you’re interested, consider staying overnight in the Setoda area to enjoy the full experience!
Reviews of ShiomachiteiAs a cyclist, it’s great to be able to park my bike safely inside on a proper rack.

It’s conveniently located near Kosanji Temple and the Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art. The extensive menu is displayed with photos on a ticket-vending machine, so it’s easy for anyone to order—even if you don’t speak Japanese. The relaxed, nostalgic atmosphere and generous portions make it a great stop for hungry cyclists. While many visitors go for the photogenic Lemon Ramen, I personally always opt for the Onomichi Ramen Set Meal.

Local Flavor of the Shimanami Kaido One of the most beloved lunch choices on Innoshima is okonomiyaki, the local style known as “In-oko". There are over 20 okonomiyaki restaurants around the Habu area of Innoshima, and among them, our favorites are Ueda Okonomiyaki, Ochi Okonomiyaki, Mikan no Hana, and Okonomiyaki T&K. Ochi Okonomiyaki is a small, retro-style shop run by a friendly lady in the old Habu Shopping Street, while Ueda Okonomiyaki is known for its hearty “Deluxe In-oko" with pork, squid, and mochi.
![[Photo] Lunch spots on the Shimanami Kaido: Exterior of Mikan no Hana, a popular okonomiyaki restaurant on Innoshima](https://touring-shimanami.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/mikannohana-inoko.jpg)

If you’re cycling in a group, small shops can be hard to enter during busy lunch hours. In that case, Mikan no Hana and Okonomiyaki T&K are more spacious and group-friendly. Mikan no Hana is closest to the main cycling route, near Oyamajinja Shrine, making it a convenient lunch stop. T&K is located on the way from southern Innoshima toward the Innoshima Suigun Castle. When ordering, you’ll often be asked to choose between udon or soba noodles—but the classic In-oko comes with udon. Give it a try!
